Last Friday, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming a group of bright and enthusiastic students from Colfox Academy to St Michael's Trading Estate in Bridport. Organised by the brilliant Laura Bush from Dorset Workplace, this visit was nothing short of inspiring - showcasing the incredible diversity of career opportunities that exist right here on our doorstep.

A Journey of Discovery

The students embarked on a fascinating tour of the estate, meeting representatives from a wide range of businesses and discovering just how many different career paths are available within a single postcode. From finance and professional services to manufacturing, technology, and creative industries, the visit truly opened their eyes to the vast array of possibilities that await them after school.

At Gavin Dixon Finance Solutions, we were delighted to share insights into the world of commercial finance, explaining how we help businesses across the South West secure funding for growth and expansion. The students asked brilliant questions about our work in agriculture, construction, and renewable energy sectors – showing genuine curiosity about how finance supports local businesses and communities.

The Excitement Was Infectious

As Laura Bush from Dorset Workplace noted, "There was such an exciting buzz on the minibus" – and we could feel that energy throughout the day. The students were genuinely engaged, asking thoughtful questions and showing real interest in learning about different career opportunities. What made the visit even more special was seeing some of the students meet successful alumni from their own school who are now thriving in various roles across the estate.

Bridging the Skills Gap

This visit couldn't have come at a more crucial time. According to the Confederation of British Industry, the UK's 5.3 million small businesses – which make up 96% of registered businesses who are facing significant recruitment challenges. Four out of five report recruitment concerns, with more than half struggling to find candidates with the right knowledge and skills.

Initiatives like this workplace visit are vital in bridging that gap, giving young people real insight into the careers available to them and the skills they'll need to succeed. It's about showing them that exciting, rewarding careers aren't just in big cities – they're right here in Dorset, in businesses that are making a real difference to our local economy.
